unread shortcode not clickable

How do I make this clickable so it goes to the member’s messages tab in their buddypress profile?

I thought I’d try putting [bp_better_messages] in a widget, but it didn’t work. Doesn’t work in a buddypress custom page either. I added it to a new wordpress page and no go there either. I like the idea of telling people they have unread messages in my sidebar, but it’s useless if it can’t be clicked to take them to their unread messages.
