Unlocking Posts to Improve Answer

    Hi. I would like to reply to a post that is locked as it has been answered. Is there any way that I can request it to be unlocked? Why do they get locked anyway? Why kill the thread?

    I simply want to let them know that the developer has suggested a working fix. There is also no option to contact anyone directly, even the moderator.

    Telling someone to uninstall a plugin is not really the best solution when there is a working fix, right?

    It’s really annoying me that threads are always locked. Why is this the case when web development is constantly evolving? What about follow up questions? What works today may not work tomorrow but a locked thread lives forever.

    Posts automatically age out and get locked. It used to be a year but I believe that’s now 90 days. That topic is 9 months old and will not be re-opened. And after 9 months do you think the original poster of that topic still needs assistance?

    Yes, exactly. Code changes especially WordPress code and an old answer may not work anymore. Updating old topics wouldn’t be that helpful as the forums are (ponders) 12 years old. It would not be helpful to go back and update all the posts in the past.

    The way these forums work is that user’s post their own topics for their problem. The topics aren’t for the plugin authors or even other users who feel “I have that problem too”. It belongs to the person who posted it. When people help in that topic, that’s amazingly cool.

    If someone has a problem with that plugin, they should start their own topic.

    You can even reply to help that person if the topic isn’t closed. But leaving topics open forever so that someone in the future can reply? That doesn’t help the original person and that just needlessly resurrects old topics.

    Thank you kindly for your reply Jan. I can see that from the forums perspective, constantly resurrecting old threads would cause a real mess. I also agree that encouraging new posts from those who believe they have the same issue is important as they usually, unintentionally, end up hijacking or confusing the thread.
