I’m using the free version of WordFence and I got several warnings from WordFence from my sites stating they had Unknown WordPress core version: 4.7.1. Note that I have used ManageWP to update them. Can this be the reason? What does this mean exactly?

    Hi,

This can happen for a short time after a new WordPress version is released, until we have a copy of the new version indexed on the Wordfence scan servers.

You might have seen the “Unknown WordPress core version” message in an email from the Wordfence plugin (unless it’s also visible within ManageWP?) — if you log into the site and view the scan results on the Scan page, the full description says:

“The core files scan will not be run because this version of WordPress is not currently indexed by Wordfence. This may be due to using a prerelease version or because the servers are still indexing a new release. If you are using an official WordPress release, this issue will automatically dismiss once the version is indexed and another scan is run.”

I confirmed that the new version has been indexed, so the message should no longer appear after the next scan is run on each site.
