Wordfence prompted me this error after scanning “Unknown file in WordPress core: wp-admin/ep_err.txt”. In cPanel, it says that the file was created Jan 09.2024 and the scan is prompting on March 01.2024

I can’t find anything on this file, is this something that is known and how do you recommend handling it?

Hi @markering2, thanks for getting in touch.

On the face of things, it seems like a file with the title “ep_err.txt” might be created by a caching, minify/optimization, or backup plugin as an error log. If you do have anything installed with the initials “E.. P…”, that could be the case. I also can’t find any reference to that specific file with WordPress within our internal threat intelligence archives or elsewhere on the web though.

It’s not normally good practice for plugins to create files inside the WordPress core folders, but it can happen with the types of plugin I mentioned above. I’d take the scan’s suggestion to remove the file (taking a backup if you wish) and see if it reoccurs in the near future.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

Thank you for answering, Peter. I deleted the file and keeping an eye on it. I wanted to have an expert opinion for future reference that might help others in case this prompt shows up again with Wordfence.

By the way, thank you for the free features on your product. It is good to have expert free safety when starting websites.
