    Hi

I have 3 messages stating Unknown File In WordPress Core.

    1
Unknown file in WordPress core: wp-admin/php.ini
    Filename: wp-admin/php.ini
    File type: Core
Issue first detected: 11 hours 6 mins ago.
    Severity: Warning
    Status New
This file is in a WordPress core location but is not distributed with this version of WordPress. This is usually due to it being left over from a previous WordPress update, but it may also have been added by another plugin or a malicious file added by an attacker.

I find this strange as how could it be left over from a previous version of WordPress? I am too scared to delete them in case my site crashes. What should I do?

  • You can download your current wp-admin folder to your computer and then delete it from the server and then upload wp-admin folder from a fresh wordpress package.

This way if something goes wrong you can upload the old wp-admin folder back. Anyway, it is always a good idea to have a recent backup of your website, so I would actualy recommend backing up the whole site and then remove wp-admin, wp-includes folders and all files from main directory accept for wp-config.php and .htaccess, and then upload the fresh ones.

Thank you Magdalena. That is pretty much what I expected. I was just hoping there may be an easier way, or it was some type of error with Wordfence.

Once again thank you for your well laid out instructions ??

    Hi gnomag,
These files aren’t included in the default WordPress installation, I suggest getting in contact with your web host about why these files are there? and if you can just delete them on your server or not. (most probably your web host added php.ini there on purpose).

P.S. you can take a quick look at the default WordPress files from the repository page on GitHub.

    Thanks.

Thanks wfalaa. I don’t think the current web host company would have done that but it may be left over from the old web host that I migrated from. I think I will just place them all in a temp file and see if everything still works.

Thanks for the link. I must get myself on GitHub one day as it seems to be where it all happens ??
