Hi there, every time I try to set up SiteKit, I get redirected back to the dashboard with the the error:

Unknown Error (code: cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: unable to get local issuer certificate). To resume setup, start here.

My site runs through Cloudflare and reading the error message, I thought the issue could to do with the Cloudflare origin certificate installed on my server. “Perhaps Google is doing client SSL certificate validation or something” I thought, knowing that the origin certificate provided by Cloudflare is effectively a self-signed certificate that is only valid to them. So, I generated some LetsEncrypt certificates to cover all bindings of the site. This made no difference however and I received the same error.

I have looked for similar issues and followed the troubleshooting steps however none of the advice here helped. I even went nuclear and disabled all plugins (aside from SiteKit) and changed my theme to TwentyTwenty to run the setup, I still got the same error. I’ve tried a mix of browsers on Windows and Mac machines, still with the same error.

I’m at a bit of a loss as I’ve installed this on other sites hosted elsewhere absolutely fine. The only difference I know of between this installation and others is that this is hosted on a Windows server (IIS 10). I don’t have another Windows server to test on unfortunately but surely this plugin works on IIS?

Any advice or further troubleshooting steps would be appreciated as i’ve seen the benefits of SiteKit and would love it up and running on my site!

  • @luc122c thanks for you topic and the detailed steps you’ve taken. The error sounds environment/ server related and we may need to do some testing on our side to see if we can replicate the same to understand what is happening.

    If possible could you:

    1) Provide both a screenshot of last page in the setup process before you are redirected back to the dashboard and the error

You can provide a link to screenshots using a service like Imgur or Jumpshare

    2) Your Site Health Information

    3) Your hosting provider and plan

I’d also like to add that I thought it could be a compatibility issue with PHP 7.4 so I tried downgrading to PHP 7.2 and had the same issue.

@luc122c thanks for the update. I’ve created this Github issue for further investigation to try to replicate the issue. We’ll keep you updated on the progress.

In the meantime, one thing to check (perhaps with Google Cloud Platform support) is if the PHP version of cURL is correctly installed and configured for successful verification with your SSL certificate.

Hi @reneesoffice, I’ve followed up with some further server info on the Github issue. Is it better to continue the discussion over there? In the meantime, I’ll take a look at the cURL configuration.

I’ve managed to resolve the issue. I’ve written a full breakdown over on the Github issue. However, for anyone having the same issue, here’s how to resolve it.

    According to this great article,

This is a common error that occurs whenever you attempt to use PHP’s cURL functions to connect to a HTTPS website. Essentially, your cURL client has not been configured to connect to SSL-enabled websites.

To resolve it, you need to download the cacert.pem certificate bundle from the official cURL website. You then need to find the [curl] section of your php.ini file and reference the file in the curl.cainfo option, then restart IIS. For example, mine now reads:
    curl.cainfo = "C:\Program Files\PHP\v7.4\extras\ssl\cacert.pem"
Further information can be found on the cURL Installation page of the PHP Manual.

@luc122c Super great to hear and fantastic troubleshooting! I know this will be helpful to other users in the forums who experience the same. Thanks for sharing what solved this for you.
