Unfortunate invasive and unpermitted install of extra software

I get it, you wanted to “Gold Plate” your plugin for existing members by “upgrading” and including a bunch of new shiny functions. Unfortunately, as you should know being in the software development space, deploying a covert and unannounced update like this is bound to break sites and be seen as an unwanted intrusion. It really is paramount to a hack/malware being installed on users sites.

The plugin owners should really be banned for this. I understand it was a mistake with good intentions, but that is not always going to be the case, nor is it an excuse for the behavior. If the precedent isn’t held strong here it will open up the doors for all sorts of bad actors to take advantage of.
