I’m running WordPress MU with the Redirect plugin. I have thousands of Redirects in the plugin, most of which date back to when I actually switched from dasBlog some other ASP blog system to WordPress.

I have had problems in the past where Redirect would mysteriously redirect a page on its own, often that Redirect would loop back to the same page causing that page to show as broken. When I detect this, I usually just check for a redirect on the page in question, delete that redirect and the site returns to normal service.

Last night I noticed that this page:

https://nesbittrealty.com/alexandria-va/old-town/

was redirecting to this page:

So I went to my usual solution but could not find a redirect. After monkeying with it for quite a while, I tried a stop-gap solution. First, I copied the old content a new page here:

https://nesbittrealty.com/alexandria-va/homes-townhomes-condos-sale-oldtown-alexandria-va/

Then I redirected https://nesbittrealty.com/alexandria-va/old-town/ to that page. That seems to work well, but the problem was my subpages weren’t listing properly, so I continued to monkey around.

Now https://nesbittrealty.com/alexandria-va/homes-townhomes-condos-sale-oldtown-alexandria-va/ is redirecting to https://www.flickr.com/photos/29715542n07/6076563425/ (I have no idea what that is)_ and th original problem page https://nesbittrealty.com/alexandria-va/old-town/ is showing up . . . sometimes . . . and sometimes the new target page redirects to the flickr page.

I’m confused and this is bizarre. Any ideas what to look at?

More bizarreness . . .

Which I’m sharing as the confusion evolves. If I browse with Firefox I’m redirected to Flickr. If I browse with IE the original page loads normally.

I’m totally baffled.

Okay. I’m less baffled but more irritated. Obviously some of the redirect issue that were bizarre were caching issues. I have a work around solution, but I still need to track down my original problem which is a redirect to Flickr for some unknown reason.

The saga continues. I just noticed another bizarre redirect, but I now realize that this redirect was performed by a plugin called Smart 404 which redirects 404’s to similar content. Most likely the original error I detected is Smart 404 redirected to some out-of-date post that was syndicated from Flickr.

The question is why are my pages suddenly 404?

The end of the story is where I should have started. I disabled both of these plugins and reactivated both. End of problem.
