Unexplained drop in page view counts for Daily Popular Posts

  • At some point within the last week I’ve noticed a sharp decline in the number of page views reported in Daily Popular Posts in my WordPress dashboard (I don’t have a counter widget enabled for the site itself). Google Analytics shows that actual page views haven’t decreased compared to previous time frames. The only other thing I know of that I suppose could have produced a change is that I have now subscribed to an internet security service to monitor what comes in to my server as well as a cloud-based back-up from the same service.

    That could most likely be the reason. The service might be blocking the counter from Top 10.

    Tried disabling this temporarily and checking?

    Thanks for your response. I think rather than attempt to disable all the security features now in place I’ll ask the service (Sucuri) and see what they say and whether there’s a workaround. At least some of the counts are coming through because new Top 10 data still appears on my dashboard, but just at a small fraction of the usual hit counts.

    It might actually be the case that Sucuri is blocking any of the spam entries which were previously filtering through.

    Well, that would be really depressing if all those robust page counts were generated by spambots! But Google Analytics doesn’t show a drop in traffic, so I’m still perplexed.

    That’s true. Unfortunately, the only option here is to temporarily disable Sucuri or ask them to check the logs to see if their blocking the script.

    Another point worth trying is this alternate script in your themes functions.php
