• I have, finally, straightened out my username/password. But when I go to post I’m told I don’t have the right permissions. When I try to find out how to fix this, I get all involved with MySQL and PHP and Myadmin. I DON’T CARE ABOUT THIS STUFF. I just want to get my blog up and running.

Is there a way to start again? Trash everything and reinstall? I mostly just want to keep my blog name.

If this doesn’t work I’m going to give it up and switch over to Blogger, which I don’t want to do. But I haven’t got the time and/or brains to deal with all the technical stuff.

    Please?

    Bill

  • If you can’t get it to work at least try at wordpress.com before selling your soul to the devil at blogger ??

What is the wrong permissions message you are given?
Are you logging in as admin, or have you created a seperate account?

I CAN’T log in at WordPress.com. I get the same stupid popup saying that the login is wrong. Different logins for wp.org and wp.com? This is why I’m trashing this mess. Who needs it? I’m not interested in geeky stuff.

If we were back in the days of typewriters, would anyone expect me to be able to repair an IBM Selectric, or even an old Underwood?

Thanks for responding, but this whole thing is taking up too much of my time and effort, to say nothing raising my frustration level.

wordpress.com and www.remarpro.com are two different animals. www.remarpro.com is a support forum for a script, and wordpress.com is a free blog service (happens to use software based on wordpress and is setup run monkeyed with by the same people who make wordpress). So if you want an account at wordpress.com you need to sign up, its very easy (actually easier then blogger).

If you can post the error you are recieving on your own install maybe we can help.
You can also trash the install and start over, thats not difficult either.

Yes, if it were broken. Unless you wanted to pay somebody else to repair it for you.

“When I try to find out how to fix this, I get all involved with MySQL and PHP and Myadmin. I DON’T CARE ABOUT THIS STUFF. I just want to get my blog up and running.”

You will have to learn the rudiments of these things in order to set up your WordPress blog on your own domain. Either that or you’ll have to get someone to do it for you. Kind of like: you can service your car or you can get someone to service it for you.

“I CAN’T log in at WordPress.com. I get the same stupid popup saying that the login is wrong. Different logins for wp.org and wp.com? This is why I’m trashing this mess. Who needs it? I’m not interested in geeky stuff.”

Well, it isn’t really geeky. If you still think it is, try logging on to whitehouse.gov and then go to whitehouse.com – you’ll find the content a little bit different! While not as much of a difference in content, there IS a difference between WordPress.com and www.remarpro.com.

By the way, did you sign up for a WordPress blog at WordPress.com or did you set up WordPress on your own domain? Huge difference, that.

Thanks to all for your interest and advice (although the idea that anyone would expect a writer to repair a typewriter is ludicrous; because I drive a car, would you expect me to be able to fix, say, my own transmission? of course you’d have to pay someone else. Otherwise we’d all be self-sufficient. And totally unproductive.)

That being said, I’m just more interested in writing than in programming, so it’s off to Blogger I go, devil or no devil.

    Thanks again.

Wow. This was a pointless thread.

Well, first off, instead of going to blogger, I’d suggest signing up for a WordPress.com account. As stated above, this is a different account than the one you have at www.remarpro.com, which may have been the source of some of your confusion.

although the idea that anyone would expect a writer to repair a typewriter is ludicrous; because I drive a car, would you expect me to be able to fix, say, my own transmission? of course you’d have to pay someone else. Otherwise we’d all be self-sufficient. And totally unproductive.

I see your point, but at the same time, I can repair a transmission. Frankly, I think Heinlein said it best:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

This is a support forum, full of people who know the code and the tech stuff. If you ask a question here, you should expect a technical answer. That’s all I’m saying. You may not be happy with the answer, but then you can always pay somebody to fix your problem for you. The forum is free.

I’m not very computer-savvy, as you note, but I’ve always been a betting man. And I’ll give real good odds against your being able to find anyone – ANYONE – who can do a COMPETENT JOB in all these areas. How many people have written decent sonnets? A dozen? Fifty? A hundred? and can you imagine any of them, other than Williams, and perhaps cummings, setting a bone?

The last time the world was that comprehensible was probably during the early 17th century. Perhaps, perhaps, during the Enlightenment.

This is typical Heinlein pointless romanticism.

Much like the deliberate use of the alternate, and almost never seen, spelling of “con.”

Thanks very much, but I’m outta here like Vladimir.

    Cheers.

Ok enough everyone, please! Let’s get back to business! Agree to disagree!

    Guys,
I just wanted to say this short bout of frustration…response…Wash rinse repeat. Made me laugh out loud.
I learned to type on an Underwood, (not many people even remember what one is) and emphathize with the poster….but the Heinlin quote…great!
At times understanding a techie answer to an analog brain like mine can be challenging but with patience, (from everyone) resolvable.
    As another respected author said
” Go not to the Elves for advice, they will say both yes and no. For advice is a dangerous gift….
Even from the wise to the wise.
(now if I could just figure how to change the background on my kubrick theme)

We need a forum called WordPoppycock, similar to TextDrivel on the TextDrive forums. :o) I nominate this thread for that one.

The point about this thread is, there were simple questions asked to the person claiming to need help, not answered. He is also claiming that he had problems getting non-geeky answers. Doesnt answer any of the questions that can lead to helping solve the problems and get the blog up and running.
If you answer some of the questions (near the beginning) maybe we can help you.

Heinlein quote: The way I always understood this, after reading lots of books by the “dirty old man”, was its not if you can actually do all of that, but it is the knowing that you can do anything, if you have to learn how to fix a transmission you will learn it, if you have to set a bone you learn how to set that bone, etc etc.

Even though I have never done it, I but f I have to write a sonnet by tomorrow, by God I will write that sonnet. (although it would probably be more of up a limerick)
