Over the past few months, when editing posts in admin, console throws about a hundred of these errors in red:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘InnerBlocks’)

And about 30 of these in yellow:

jquery.min.js?ver=3.6.1:2 jQuery.Deferred exception: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘InnerBlocks’) TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘InnerBlocks’)

When “Classic Editor” is not active, we don’t see any errors in Console/F12. Wondering if there is anything we might be able to try to resolve. Our team really likes Classic Editor but this is really slowing down the editing of all posts. Thank you!

Hi @ninjaray – here are the troubleshooting steps I’d recommend:

    • Is the issue present with all your plugins temporarily deactivated, except Classic Editor? You can use the Health Check plugin‘s troubleshooting mode for this, which will not change your live site. If the problem goes away, reactivate your plugins one by one (while still in troubleshooting mode) to find the culprit.
    • Is the issue present with a classic default theme like Twenty Twenty-One? Again, you can use the Health Check plugin for this.

Thanks for the troubleshooting steps. The issue is only present with Yoast SEO active. No other themes and plugins caused any trouble. This being the case, is there anything that can be done to address it or is my only option to reach out to Yoast SEO for assistance? In other words, how to tell if Yoast is breaking Classic Editor or is Classic Editor breaking Yoast? ?? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi @ninjaray – since the Classic Editor has not changed its functionality for many years – it hasn’t been developed since 2019, when the block editor was introduced – I would guess that it’s probably Yoast SEO that would need to tweak something on their end. It’s likely that they no longer test their plugin against the classic editor, instead focussing on compatibility with WordPress core (i.e. block editor) functionality.
