Unavailable attribute combinations shown

When you have a variable product which has multiple product based attributes (in my case surface and size) and you have created them using custom attributes the customer is able to select an unavailable combination.

Then this message is shown:

Leider entsprechen keine Produkte Ihrer Auswahl. Bitte w?hlen Sie eine andere Kombination.

Update: I create a new variable product using global attributes as found under Dashboard->Products->Attributes (in German Dashboard->Produkte->Eigenschaften) and everything works as expected. So I believe I should use product based attributes which could be created on the edit page of the product.
