• Hi everyone,

I deleted all unattached images. Turned out half my images disappeared. Now I’m kinda scared to do it again, while I know I have a few that actually ARE unattached. How do I now figure out (in a fast way) which ones are save to delete, or is this weird bug-thing something I can fix??

It’s not uncommon for images to be unattached, yet be utilized on the site somewhere. Attachment only indicates the related post in which the image was first used. After that initial insertion, all sorts of things can happen to the post or image that renders attachment status irrelevant.

It’s not that simple to reliably determine if a particular image is still utilized in any sizable site. Image references on a site can be made in many ways, so even searching all content for a particular image name isn’t 100% reliable. Going by attachment status certainly is not, as you’ve learned the hard way.

Searching all content and postmeta for a partial match to the image’s base name should confirm with some certainty if an image is used, but there are still exceptions and you can get false positive matches.
