• I am a new member of WP.

I am trying to upload a theme and I am not sure exactly what name I am supposed to put beside HOST. I just know my username and password.

Without this HOST name I can’t upload a new theme. Could you please tell me exactly where to go to find this information.

    Many thanks.

    MM

  • Is your blog hosted on WordPress.COM? Is your site along the lines of “username.wordpress.com”? (the URL you go to for sign-in)

If so you are not allowed to upload a new Theme.

They have about 80 approved Themes for you to choose from. Don’t worry many of the Themes allow you to change colors and put graphics in the header so your site does not need to look like all the others.

If you are not on WordPress.COM you will need to talk to your Host for the upload information (there are several things to setup).

Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply to my question. This switch to WP.org from Google is a HUGE change for me. I thought I was moving to .com … seems not. I have a website name that I wanted to use and I guess my host just figured I should sign up for .org.

My host, TCH, had given me the wrong directions regarding the login. They fixed it and sent me the appropriate words to fill in the blanks. I was able to upload the new templates and all is okay with that subject now.

Now if I could just figure out how to get all the “stuff” off the various templates, like calendars and superfluous words, I’ll be happy. It’s going to take me awhile to figure out how WP works.

    Hey Maudie Muddled,

Usually to choose available templates for your wordpress, you will find it in Appearance < Themes click new. You can choose how many columns, what color, etc.

    Good luck ??

Thank you Kim, I am busily “experimenting.”

Tell me, can I “play” with a variety of templates and not lose all the changes I have made to the basic default WP Template?

Also, are there other templates that are safe to me to use besides the ones that come up in my Admin site?

You can add as many themes you want without hurting that theme.

But, and this is a BIG BUT, subsequent WordPress updates MAY overwrite your Default theme changes. Now, with that said, it seems with the coming Version 3.0 the developers will no longer deliver the WordPress Default theme and as such your changes would then be safe. But it is probably better to copy your wp-content/themes/default folder to wp-content/themes/mydefault folder and use that theme.
