    Hi,

since late December 2015 (not sure of the exact date, but it was between Dec 11th and Dec 25th) I haven’t been able to upload images successfully. The upload itself is fine, but the images don’t display in the media library except as a question mark icon (when using Safari) or a broken picture icon (using Firefox).

The website is https://www.takahe.org.nz – we’re a small literary magazine, and have only just shifted everything over to WordPress (although I’ve had my own blog on WordPress.com for quite a few years). I have a page to demonstrate the problem: https://www.takahe.org.nz/media-test-page/
The green logo is one we had already uploaded before the problem started. The other two were uploaded separately from different computers by different users, and both have the same issue.

The problem didn’t coincide with an update or anything like that. But all plugins (both of them) are up to date, as is our version of WordPress and the theme we’re using (Seasonal). I think both plugins and WordPress have been updated at least once since this problem started.

I have tried turning off the plugins, but it made no difference.
I have tried deleting and re-uploading the images, but no difference.
I have tried using different browsers, and different computers, but no difference.
Images that had already been uploaded to the media library are fine; everything else will not display.

My knowledge of things like PHP and SQL is negligable (one of the reasons why I love WordPress is not having to know this stuff), so help would be greatly appreciated, especially if it involves things of that nature. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere – I did search, but need more guidance.

  • Do you have anything (security plugin, code, etc.) that prvents people from hotlinking or “stealing” your images?

I forgot to add that I cannot see your images even if I paste in the actual paths to the images.

I don’t have anything to stop people hotlinking.
The only plugins I have are Jetpacck and one for backing things up. (Stupidly I can’t access the dashboard at the moment – my browser keeps telling me it can’t locate the server.)

Stupidly I can’t access the dashboard at the moment – my browser keeps telling me it can’t locate the server.

Your server is playing hide-and-seek? ??

First, deactivate Jetpack temporarily. See if the images are visible.

Sorry, I thought I’d been clearer. I have tried deactivating Jetpack, but it made no difference. I still got the broken image icon, including in the media library, although the info about the size and name of the image was as it should be. (It would all make sense if only the image was of a non-existant image …) (It wasn’t.)

I have tried turning off the plugins, but it made no difference.

Somehow, my brain skipped right over that. ??

First try switching to the default 2016 theme and see if it changes anything.

If not, you may have to reinstall the WordPress core files again. This can be done without any loss of content or images.

Can you access File Manager by logging into your host?
Who is your host? (Bluehost, HostGator, Godaddy, etc.)

    (@takahe)

Ok, my server has finally stopped playing hide and seek ??

I’ve now tried switching to 2016, and the problem remains the same.

My host is FreeParking. I’ll need quite detailed instructions about how to reinstall core files. Or even just something nice and clear to tell the helpful tech support people tomorrow morning.

Apologies if I don’t respond to any suggestions for the next ten hours or so. The time difference makes things a bit tricky, and I really don’t want to be tinkering with things I don’t understand when I’m starting to nod off … ??

My time zone is Eastern Standard Time (North America) UTC?05. 03:56 (am) right now. This could continue later, if you wish.

Later would be good, although if you make suggestions in the interim I can get back to you tomorrow after I try them out. I have just learned the hard way not to try techie things when I’m either over-tired or under-caffeinated … and right now I’m both. Back in eleven hours. And thank you.

    Okay see you around then.

Back online, and at my computer. With coffee!

Hi… if you are ready to go, I’m ready (…coffee also)

You are replacing the WordPress install completely, which is being done without losing any content of your site.

First, downloaded a fresh copy of WordPress to your computer and unzipped it.

Then login to your FreeParking account and see if you can find cPanel > File Manager. FreeParking does not have clear instructions on their Technical Guides, so if you cannot find this, let me know before going further.

Through this, don’t rush and if you have a qusetion, ask it. I will be monitoring this thread until you are done.

    ===========

The full path you will take is Your Account > cPanel > File manager > public_html (or www) and you should see your WordPress installation as the list is below.

    ===========

Being as there are may be other files that are not a part of WordPress, I will list the exact files and folders to replace.

The files/folder you will NOT replace:
    – wp-content folder
    – htaccess (if one is there)
    – wp-config.php

    Do not rush doing this!!

Next, you will first delete all the following and then upload new, one folder or file at a time:
    – wp-admin folder
    NOT wp-content folder
    – wp-includes folder

    – the following files only:
    index.php
    wp-activate.php
    wp-blog-header.php
    wp-comments-post.php
    NOT wp-config.php
    wp-cron.php
    wp-links-opml.php
    wp-load.php
    wp-login.php
    wp-mail.php
    wp-settings.php
    wp-signup.php
    wp-trackback.php
    xmlrpc.php

There will be a “wp-config-sample.php” in the fresh WordPress. Do not upload this.

This will replace your WordPress files without losing content.

Check your site and post back here with your results. As I said, I will be monitoring this thread.

Ok, just logging in to FreeParking.

    Thread Starter takahe

    (@takahe)

Have found my way into public html, and am about to start deleting and replacing. I have your instructions printed out in front of me, and will cross things off as I go. (Oooh, this feels wrong.)

Ok, stupid question time: how do I upload the new files? Drag and drop, or do I need to go through a command in the File Manager?

    Thread Starter takahe

    (@takahe)

Found the Upload command, but when I do a drag and drop upload of the wp-admin folder, I get a message saying “an unknown error occured”. If I go back to /home/takahe/public_html, it has created a zero bytes text/x-generic file called wp-admin.

What do I need to do?
