  • likely you are not doing anything wrong
could be your host doesn’t allow it or could be a php error
why not just do it manually?

thanks i am using https://www.000webhost.com and have backup the settings and also the mysqual database, i also have downloded them to my pc, what is the .htaccess file and where can i find it?

000webhost definitely does not allow the auto upgrades

the .htaccess is generated when you set your permalinks
    admin – settings – permalinks
set your ftp client to view hidden files – it will be in your wordpress root
you may not have one if you never generated one

I hope it’s okay if I use this thread, since I have a similar problem. I try using Auto-update, but it doesn’t work. On the first try, it simply told me “update failed”, on the second try it said “unable to locate root directory”. I do know how to upgrade manually (as I’ve done that for years), but I simply love the auto-upgrade ?? Were there any changes made to the upgrade in 2.8 (the version I’m currently running) that could possibly prevent an update, although it was possible for me to update to 2.8 (and all previous versions since the introduction of this feature) automatically?

edit: Just noticed that I get a similar error when trying to update one of the Plugins: Unable to locate WordPress Plugin directory.

Not sure about 000webhost but at 1and1, I once had this issue but resolved it when I added

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

at the top of my .htaccess before the wordpress section and it allowed me to upgrade anything automatically from the admin interface.

    HTH.
