I’m a web designer and one of my customers, hosted by LunarPages, is suddenly unable to update WordFence. I have her set to auto updates and they seem to have stopped some time ago. She’s running WordFence 7.1.9. When I try to update it on the Plugins page, I get this error message. I also contacted the hosting company, who said they adjusted some file permissions, but I’m still unable to update the plugin. Any tips are welcome.

Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.

  • Hey @hollykny,

This may actually be due to user/owner permissions versus actual file/directory permissions. You might speak to your host about this.

In the meantime, you can manually update Wordfence.

Thanks, Gerroald – I wasn’t sure I’d be able to manually update WordFence … concerned I’d lose all the settings I’ve changed and such. I’ll give it a shot!

    Hey @hollykny,

I want to mention that if you’re only copying over the files, it won’t affect your settings since they’re stored in the database.

Please do let me know how it goes, or if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

Good to know. I will keep you posted. Want to see if the hosting company can account for the sudden issue and if they can’t address it, I’ll do the manual update and report back.

    Hey @hollykny,

I believe this is fixed. There was a file being flagged as malicious from cpGuard. Our developers reached out to them, and I’ve had several customers mention they’ve pushed an update to fix it. Can you please install a fresh copy of Wordfence and let me know how it goes?

    Thanks,

    Hi Gerroald,

Last night the hosting company got in touch and said “the ownership of some files had changed” so they made some adjustments and they updated the plugin for me, so all is current on our end for now.

    Hey @hollykny,

Thanks for the update, and I’m happy to hear they were able to track this down.

Please let us know if anything else comes up.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
