• Hi all,

After countless of different approaches and attempts, I have been stumbling into the same problem the whole day.

I have 19 plugin updates ready to go but WordPress refuses to update these plugins and provides me with this error message: Update failed -1.

Also, when I try to download a new plugin it refuses and gives me the following error message: Update failed.

I tried to update the plugins on a different website I own, and everything works perfectly fine there.

I checked everything including PHP with my hosting and nothing seems to work.

Can someone please advise and help me solve the issue?

  • Hello, lucaskl, & welcome.

Please help us by providing the following information:

    • What operating system are you using–Windows or Linux?
    • What version/distribution?
    • Are you on shared hosting, a VPS, or dedicated server?

Is your site health screen providing any information regarding critical issues?

I think I’ve thrown enough questions at you for now. I apologize for that, but we need more information in order to be of assistance. Thank you in advance for providing it.

Hi abletec, thank you for your swift reply and no worries at all.

So, my operating system is neither, it is MacOS. Version 12.6.3. However, I did not think that could have had anything to do with the issue since WordPress is used on the web. I tried on safari and Chrome. Also, I used the same computer to update the plugins on my other site, which worked. So it must be something that is in the WordPress area of that specific site. My hosting is STRATO which I believe is a shared hosting?

And no, no information is being provided regarding critical issues. I’am not that well-known with tech/programming so I can’t seem to find out what the issue is.

I do think its weird that one WordPress backend for one site does everything within seconds and the other one simply refuses to do anything. So it must be within that the dashboard for that website itself right?

Again, thank you for your help. Much appreciated! Please let me know if you know anything that might help to solve the issue

@lucaskl Are you using Astra starter templates plugin? If yes, try this guideance: https://wpastra.com/docs/resolve-update-failed-1-issue/

@contentiskey Thank you so much! This just solved the issue completely. I simply had to deactivate the astra starter templates plugin and then I was able to update that plugin and with that also the rest of the plugins. Life saver! Thank you.
