• Hello

I am unable to switch between classic editor und block editor. I have to switch in the classic editor plugin directly, I cannot switch before starting to compose a new post. That is annoying; we are two of us writing in our blog – one using classic editor, one block editor. This did work finely up to WP 4.X and CE 0.5. Doesn’t work anymore für WP 5.0 and CE 1.1.

I have two pages, and I have the issue on both of them.

  • I can confirm this weird behavior. It’s not possible to switch.

@sandhofer I think this case works well. If you are the admin, select the default editor for the blog (from Settings -> Writing), and “allow users” to switch editors. Then each user, including you, can set their preferred editor on their Profile page.

Nope. It does not work like this. If my colleague switches, I am switched, too. (We are both admins.) And in order to switch, you have to touch the plugin’s settings. With WordPress 4.X and Classic Editor 0.5 I could choose my editor almost on the fly, i.e. when starting to write. This is not anymore the case. It would be so much easier, why couldn’t you keep that?

You mean you cannot select a default editor on your Profile page? Or that you’re missing the “Add New (Classic)” menu item? If the latter, it was removed when the UI was redesigned, The reason is that all users (including admins) can choose a default editor now and the default “Add New” menu will honor that choice.

You mean you cannot select a default editor on your Profile page?

Of course I can. But if I do it, it’s everybody else’s default editor, too. (Must be about the third time, I write that down here…) And if my colleague is changing it, its changed for me, too. It simply does not work the way you tell.

Or that you’re missing the “Add New (Classic)” menu item?

Of course I am missing it. It was so easy choosing one’s editor on the fly, and everybody promised, that with WordPress 5.0 and the Classic Editor Plugin nothing would change. A lot has changed and without any apparent reason or benefit for simple users like us. Btw: With WordPress 4.X and Classic Editor 0.5 every single entry was correctly marked in the backend – telling us with which editor it was built with. Now there seems to be a random distribution of these markings. Not even that was kept. Why? Why did you change your plugin’s behaviour completely? Why?

Of course I can. But if I do it, it’s everybody else’s default editor, too.

Hmm, this is not how the plugin should work. Perhaps there is a problem somewhere. Once an admin has allowed users to switch editors, each user, including the admins, can select their editor on the “Users -> Profile” screen. The selection on your screenshot is exactly our selection. Seems, the second part about allowing to switch is simply ignored.

How about downgrading the thing back to 0.5, which was fine with everybody?

    Plugin Author Andrew Ozz

    (@azaozz)

If it is ignored, it’s either a bug or possibly interference/conflict with another plugin (or –something– in the theme’s functions.php file).

Sure, you can downgrade by downloading the older version.

Ah, I think I figured out what you mean, sorry for the delay. It’s (most likely) the functionality to “remember” the last editor used for a post and open it next time.

This is done because it is better to always edit a particular post in the same editor. You can of course override that by either using the links in the post listing on the Posts screen, or from the link on the Edit Post screen. However frequently switching editors when editing may break some blocks or cause other issues (depending on the post content and blocks used).

    (@sandhofer)

Well … it just does not remember the last editor. It mostly gives “block editor” as last editor – even if the post was written in Classic Editor. But sometimes it tells me the the posting was written in Classic Editor, although I know (because I wrote it myself) that it was written in Block Editor. When Block Editor still was named Gutenberg and still was a Plugin and WordPress still was 4.9, they would remember exactly. Now they don’t remember and I still cannot switch the editor on the fly, the way I could when Block Editor still was Gutenberg… ??

WordPress used to be so easy to use and work with. This new thing they labeled WordPress is going to kill the brand. But I guess Mark is sitting on a beach somewhere counting his millions and could care less..

By use of classic editor plugin, you can easily go back to the old version of WordPress.
