• All,
I am total beginner and this post is likely to be frustrating for experts. This is my first post and I need your help. About 2 years ago I retained someone to develop website with CMS for me. Long story short they did in WordPress. BTW I have no clue which version because seems that things do not work properly in last several days. Here is what I know:

To login to my editor I go to:
    mywebsite.com/wp-admin/post.php

It opens a page where I enter username and password. OK I can login and it shows a page with the link menu items in the left frame. The problem is that no matter which link (Posts,Media,Pages…) I click it does NOT show anything in the right frame, which worked fine just until few days ago. I am not sure what version I am running but my guess is 3.3.1

My website works fine just that I cannot edit its content. Please help

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of your current version of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    esmi,
thanks for the help. actually my problem is that all i have is deployed website. i do not have anything locally ie i do not have a client that connects to the website and performs updates/ftp or whatever. the person that developed the site is not accessible and now i am stuck ie cannot edit my website.

as i said i am total beginner and know nothing about word press. what i do not understand is that once my website has been deployed to whatever the hosting server i use, how it is possible that edit functionality all of a sudden does not work?

As a site owner/manager, you will need to learn how to use FTP or whatever file management application your host provides as these are essential skills for any site. If you cannot manage this yourself, you may want to consider hiring someone to carry out the work for you. We cannot fix the problem here as we do not (nor do we want) have access to your site. All we can do is help you to carry out the work yourself

Do you know who hosts your site?

    esmi,
i already contacted that person and did not get the response. i understand you cannot fix the problem, i am now learning how this works, kind of.
what i currently do not understand is this:

under the assumptions that i am the only one who has access to my website editor, how it is possible that things stop working? i was told that this could be because of ‘updates’. my question is, is it possible to disable updates. i do not care if my site is running on word press 1.0 and the latest version is 100.0. i do not want silent updates ie when it works i do not want to change it.

how it is possible that things stop working?

It could just be a damaged file, These things do happen, But then given that you are running a very old version of WordPress, your site may have been hacked. ??

is it possible to disable updates.

WordPress 3.3.1 didn’t update automatically. Automatic updates were only introduced in WordPress 3.7 and then only for minor updates. Major updates still have to be triggered manually.

i do not care if my site is running on word press 1.0 and the latest version is 100.0.

The hackers so. They target sites running older versions of WordPress. See https://blog.sucuri.net/2012/03/wordpress-understanding-its-true-vulnerability.html
