We are using WF on a multisite on a rather locked down server. We had turned on Falcon Engine as a test to see what kind of impact it would have. There were some adverse issues and now it seems we cannot properly turn it off.

Because the server is so locked down for security, I had copied the htaccess rules into the htaccess file as instructed. Falcon Engine came on with no problem.

However, when attempting to disable it in Network Admin -> WordFence -> Performance Setup changing the setting to no caching fails. I get the popup notice that reads “Warning: We could not remove the caching code from your .htaccess file. you need to remove this manually yourself. Caching has been disabled on your system.” and I’ve manually removed the added rules from the htaccess file, and then clicked to refresh that screen, but the page still displays the radio button with Falcon Engine on. No matter what I do, it will not reset to the No Performance Improvement setting. I do assume that because the rules are not in the htaccess file, that Falcon Engine is not working, but I’m concerned that since this setting won’t correct itself, there are some issues we might not be aware of.

I’ve deactivated reactivated it. I’ve even gone through the database and manually deleted all the WF tables and rebuilt them by reactivating the plugin. I also tried changing the setting on the options page to delete the data on deactivation, but that setting won’t save for some reason. I do suspect that some of the issues are because of the server lockdown, and unfortunately I can’t speak on that as our server admin is responsible for the server itself. I am going to invite him to keep an eye on this thread, and maybe answer questions you might have about the server.

    Thanks!

You are correct that it is probably due to the way the site is locked down. Wordfence has a config cache that uses a temporary file (wp-content/plugins/wordfence/tmp/configCache.php), and if it isn’t writable anymore, any options that were in the cache at the time of the lockdown would be stuck.

On the Wordfence options page, turn on “Disable config caching”, near the bottom of the page, and save settings — then go back to the Performance setup, and try turning the caching option off again.

The “Disable config caching” option skips the cache, so it should save correctly, unlike some of the others, if this is the issue.

Let me know if this helps, or if you are still having trouble.

Yes, that was precisely it. Thanks for the tip on that setting, I hadn’t seen that one. That temp file explains why I couldn’t find the setting in database anywhere, I was scouring the database tables for the setting in frustration.

This solution was perfect, I appreciate the great plugin and the quick, accurate response. This is resolved, thank you!

Great, thanks for confirming that, and I’m glad it’s working again!

    Hello,

I have similar issue – I can’t enable Falcon Engine.
When I choose “Enable Wordfence Falcon Engine” and press “Save Changes…”
In-page popup appears, look this screenshot https://prnt.sc/crzsbu, https://prntscr.com/crzppm, and I can’t press any links or buttons on that page. So I can’t press to save my current .htaccess file, because the link un-clickable and can’t enable the Falcon Engine.

I tried a lot of things. No other caching plugins are enabled and I tried to reinstall Wordfence plugin – no luck.

BTW I can’t find “Disable config caching” option in the options page.

Slideshow Gallery plugin was an issue.
I just disabled Slideshow Gallery, Enabled Falcon, and re-enabled Slideshow Gallery back.

    All is working.
