• Whenever anyone tries to post a comment on my site (including myself), that post becomes the only post on that page but there is no place to make a comment. I can’t even see comments that are on a post unless I login and view it through the dashboard. I tried using a different theme. I checked to make sure comments were allowed. I upgraded weeks ago. I can’t understand why I can’t make a comment. Please help.

  • Did you try with the default or classic?

I was having a similar problem. Comments on old posts were visible until I messed with the comment options, then new posts did not display the comment field. I upgraded, but no joy. I switched to classic – now the comment field is visible again. My old theme is really tricked out, I hate to change it. Any ideas on what’s causing the problem?

I tried both Classic and Default and have the same problem. The whole comment dialog box is nonexistent in each case. Any more suggestions?

Next step: disable all the plugins and see if it works. If yes, activate them one by one until you find the culprit.

I’ve deactivated every plugin (even Akismet) and still have the same problem. I even tried using the Classic and Default themes again. I still can’t create a comment.

    Did it ever work?
It seems there is something wrong with your whole WP install.

Yes it worked in the past. My most recent successful comment was Jun 20th.

Does that mean I have to reinstall wordpress from scratch? Do an update? What are my options here?

So, what happened after that date? Was the upgrade done after that?

To be honest, I don’t really know how to go from here – unless taking a closer look at it.
Don’t go with the “install from scratch”, please! That could wipe out your whole content (all the posts, pages, comments etc.) Let’s try to figure it out. If you want I can take a look at it – use my name here AT transycan DOT net; send me all the access info to the site (site admin, ftp, blog admin). I cannot garantuee anything but I might get a better idea about what’s going on.

Apparently I used the index.php file that came with my new theme. I copied it onto my old one. I thought I had a backup but I didn’t. How do I get my old index.php back or reset the one I have? Also, I noticed that even though I can’t make a comment or see old ones, I apparently can see old ones when I click the “Comments RSS” button. I also noticed that when I turned off Akismet, I can still get spam comments even though I can’t seem to make one myself. Help!

I think it is solved ??

And for future reference: downloading the WP package you can always get any file you need, including the “short and sweet” index.php file from the root of the WP install.
