• Hi, My client called me in tears today because she can no longer paste from Word with her formatting. I know doing so is a no-no, but I have not been able to help her to be comfortable writing in WordPress, so she has been pasting to the tinyMCE “W” clipboard to create her posts and preserve her formatting created in Word. Which of course is gone now.

I thought the Ultimate TinyMCE plugin could be interfering, so I removed it completely and did not see any change in the TinyMCE behavior.

I was able to reproduce the problem in Firefox, although no errors showed up in the console. When I paste in Safari, both regular links and phone links transfer fine, in Chrome, only the regular links come across, not the phone number links. In all of them it is impossible to change the color of a <hr> without knowing how in html. And of course the font and font size options have been removed with the plugin.

What can we do to help her without causing her to lose the productivity she has become accustomed to?

  • @jdnin Do you also see the issue in TinyMCE itself, either in iframe mode or inline mode?

If so, this is a bug in MCE, you should file a bug with that project. If not, you should file a bug in WordPress Trac.

Having just updated to 4.0 we are having the same problem as now unable to paste formatted text from a word or Open Office document and unable to preserve imbedded links. This is a MAJOR set back as most of our content is from existing documents. I have worked around it by creating an HTML document from the original and copying and pasting the source code….. NOT an option for most of our less tech members and a pain in the posterior!
A fix for this is desperately needed if we are to not have to step back to an earlier version!!

@don46 Do you see the same issue in TinyMCE itself, from their example pages I linked above? If so, please file a bug with TinyMCE. If not, please file a bug with WordPress so they can know about it. In either case, I’m curious what formatting is interfering, I just tested and links, bolds, italic, copy-pastes just fine. Can you provide an example document that will not copy-paste correctly into WordPress 4?

    @programmin
Im not sure I know how to do that but I will try and be more precise as to what I am seeing
Copying from a formatted Word (.doc created in OO) it will not paste in the ‘visual’ tab unless the ‘T’ text option is enabled and then pastes as basic text. Copying a similar document directly from Open Office (.odt)it will post on the ‘visual tab without invoking the ‘text’ option but again does not carry the formatting over, I note that formatting of the resulting text within the WordPress editor then works fine. I also note that copy and paste from a displayed web page (in my case from Firefox) also works fine directly into the ‘visual’ tab and all formatting and links carry over.
    Hope this clarifys things.

    Hi there,
For what it’s worth, I had the same problem, found a plugin called Mammoth by searching for “paste from word” and so far it’s worked like a charm.

I found a quick workaround that doesn’t involve installing any additional software (locally or WordPress plug-ins):

    1) Copy your content from Word
    2) Paste into this online rich text editor – thanks Quackit!
    3) Copy your content from Quackit
    4) Paste into your WordPress editor

This preserved formatting, links, and tables for me.
