• Two things:

First, The /wp-login page wasn’t working – it gave everyone a bad password error or a bad Captcha error upon login.

I re-uploaded a fresh copy of wp-login.php. When it uploads, it goes from 34 kb to 0 kb – there is no code in the file as it’s saved to the server.

Using FileZilla to connect, hosted on DigitalOcean.

    Thanks!

You’ll need to get in touch with your hosting provider about your trouble with overwriting files, but replacing wp-login.php won’t fix your problem.

Your problem sounds plugin-related, as WordPress doesn’t provide captcha on its own.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

Thanks. I’ll contact hosting about FTP.

I did turn off all plugins by renaming the directory to “XXplugins,” but that didn’t solve the login issue.

For what it’s worth, Tags seem to have disappeared from posts as well, i.e. https://bit.ly/28O3zoG

    Thanks,

Ok, when you get access, delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with copies from a fresh download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

I guess it sounds like a core file was modified to add captcha support then, but even though it’s visible when wp-login.php is loaded, that doesn’t mean that it is the modified file.
