• Hi there,

I just updated from 3,9,2 to 4.1. Everything went fine. I got a message stating that the database would need to be backed up and that this may take longer. I clicked update and then it logged me out and asked me to log back in again. Now I am unable to. I have tried to reset the password numerous times but it doesn’t work.

I get no error message, just hangs on the login screen and then does nothing.

Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.

  • Please forgive me… but I think you are confused here.

The wp-config-sample.php file is included with WordPress. The instructions say to rename this file as wp-config.php (after we specify the database credentials).

The wp-config-sample.php file is never executed by WordPress. It is only included for reference.

Only when this file is renamed to wp-config.php.. does it begin to get executed.

So, typical WordPress installations will have a wp-config.php file that is an exact replica of the wp-config-sample.php file (minus the database credentials).

It sounds like you need to grab a fresh wp-config-sample.php file… modify it with your database credentials… and save it as wp-config.php. Then replace the one you currently have with the modified one.

You are correct and no need to forgive. I am confused.

Sorry. Will look at editing the file and rename as suggested and then see what happens.

    Thanks for your patience.

It has been running fine under the current config. As I understand it the installation of WP was done by hosting company. Its not my site.

I’m getting this message when I try to access my site:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_json_encode() in D:\Hosting\3647649\html\wp-includes\class.wp-scripts.php on line 186

I tried automatically uploading the new 4.1.

    Hi Josh,

Quick question. How would it have been possible before to hand to log in and out of the site, carry out a number of updates, add plug ins etc and modify and create pages etc if the wp-config. file was needed to access?

It does say that this part of the installation process is optional

you are probably better off putting that in your own thread. May be different issues.

Your wp-config.php file will be automatically edited with your new database access details when you install WordPress automatically using a one click installation script in cPanel provided by the best web hosts.
