“Unable to locate WordPress Plugin directory.”

This most often happens when using the FTP method of updating plugins. There’s no good fix for it, the FTP method is more of a backup for when it can’t modify your files on the server directly.

Sometimes you can make it not use FTP by setting permissions on the plugins to be world-writable. Not a good idea for the long term, but might help in the short term.

The weird thing is, I am running three WordPress blogs on the same server (different subdomains). Two of them automatically upgrade just fine, I’ve never had a problem. The third refuses to upgrade no matter what I do. I don’t get it, they’re all running 2.7.1, one just doesn’t want to work right.

Assign 755 recursive permissions to wp-contents folder and use your server IP address instead of host name in ftp details while upgrading automatically..

Disable all the plugins and take nacessary backup before upgrading wordpress

Hi Shane, thanks for this tip – but 755 recursive permissions covers A LOT of files in themes and plugins and uploads. Can you narrow it down a little for us, or at least advise on the security implications of leaving it that way?
