I am unable to install themes or plugins on my wordpress blog. Each time I try to install themes or plugins, I keep getting page not found 404. I am able to login to my web using FTP though. Help, can’t find any help on the net. I have even tried to deactivate all the plugins, but did not resolve.

Are you installing themes in /wp-content/themes/ ?

I am trying to install from within my blog, which I have done earlier as well and it installs fine. I am aware that I can log in using FTP and copy the themes folder under the /wp-content/themes/. However I am not sure why I am unable to install from within the blog.

In wp-admin, in the side bar, can you see the themes and plugins menu boxes?

If you go to themes or plugins using them, can you load the page to “add new” for either?

Or are you saying that the add new pages just don’t work, or are they asking for ftp account details, or are they timing out when downloading or installing?

… a man walked into the doctor and said, “I’m sick”.
The doctor replied, “So am I. Why do patients never give me the full story?”.

    Thanks for the response.

I am well into the Add New page and I get the options of Search, Upload, Newest, Featured, Recently Updated etc. When I select Recently Updated and the select the theme iDream or for that matter any theme, I encounter a Oops! This link appears to be broken in Chrome or Page not found 404 in IE. Not sure what went wrong.

    Thanks,

If I select Details of the theme, it just sits there. If I select preview, I am able to see the preview of my blog as it would appear with the new theme. It is just the install link, that seems to be broken.

    Please help.

As a work around I have tried to copy the iDream themes folder to my FTP site and was able to see this new theme in my blog’s available list of themes. Hoping I have a work around, now the activate this theme gives me the same error as it was for installing the theme. I am not sure what am I missing.

Try deactivating all of your plugins, then try to install a new theme. If it works this time, one of your plugins may be interfering with the theme’s installation. You’ll have to reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

Thanks for the response. I did try that, but did not help.

I suppose it is possible that your host has some security measures in place preventing the installation of files from within a PHP script (WordPress). The best way to test this would be to create a second installation of WordPress (new directory, new files, new database). If you can’t install themes or plugins with this second “clean” installation of WordPress, then the problem is with your hosting provider.

yes,i agree.check with your system admin or hosting provider that you have permissions to upload files inside the theme.

Thanks macmanx, I already have another install of wordpress catering to a separate domain name. (same hosting provider) I have tested this on that one and I have no problems installing themes or plugins. It is just this one, which is having a problem.

Also, when I try to open the https://www.myurl.com/wp-admin/ in chrome it comes up with the following error :Oops! This link appears to be broken.. However am able to open it in IE.

Having said that, remember I am unable to install themes either from IE or Chrome.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Can you describe each step of the theme and/or plugin install? Where does the installation process stop?

I am able to reach the theme list. Once I select a theme and click on install, it returns with the error message.
