Unable to install the plugin: blank page asking for FTP credentials

I have the latest versions of all the plugins necessary to run WC Multilingual, but when I try to activate “String Translation”, “Translation Management” and WC Multilingual, I get a white page (not a WP admin page) asking for FTP credentials, and the website goes blank (showing that screen even in the frontend).
After that, the only way to get the website back online is to deactivate those plugins through FTP. No debug notices, warnings or fatal errors.
