  • Hi There.

I’m getting an this error – “Error Message : couldn’t connect to host” – when trying to used the Restore from URL function in the new site.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Mark.

Try going to the site via ftp to make sure the WP Clone backup file is there. If it is you can right click and copy the url and use this to direct your new site to grab a backup. Note: Using this method you will have to change the first part of the pasted url from ftp:// to https://www

    Hope this helps

    @intowernet good one ??

@8persap make sure that the link is working by entering it to your browser. if you’re doing a localhost to live site restore, you’ll have to upload the zip file to a service like dropbox first.

WP Clone plugin issue, first time user…did everything as supposed to for set-up on both servers. Migrating from localhost to external server and i get error..
“Error Message : A valid URL was not provided.” Seemed straight forward enough but can’t figure out why this doesn’t work.

Re:WP Clone plugin issue…Does it make a difference how i save permalinks for migration with this plugin? Cheers!

Doesn’t work for me (3.7.1 on both sides) to a local host or AWS.

I see there are some workarounds above but none of them look like the structures I see, or I’m not smart enough to look in the right place, or they look like more work than brute force copy & paste content.

This would be a bloody brilliant plugin IF it worked. I assume it did once, so WP Academy members, is there a real fix in sight?

    Michael (and all) –

There are several different types of errors reported on this thread — please use new threads.

In the case of moving a site from local host to production, there should not be any problem. Just copy the backup file to the root directory of new website, rename it and then refer to it as https://yoursite.com/backupname.zip. We are updating our FAQ page on this (https://members.wpacademy.com/wpclone-faq)

    mikewh & Michael King,

I think this is one of the best plugins created. I have used it on dozens and dozens of sites on three different servers and it works like a charm. If you look at the post above I too had complaints only to discover it was me and not the plugin.

So that being said and to try and track down the issue, have you gone into your old site, (the one being cloned) via ftp and making sure that the backup file is there?

As far as it making a difference about how your permalinks are set, I don’t think so but I think the Author needs to address that.

thanks WP Academy Member For The best plugin

    the best solution

    open Ftp and Go to

    /wp-content/uploads/wp-clone

and change the name of the backup file with English name not different language

now right click on the backup file and copy the url

now go to the new site open wp clone and put the url

    must the Url like this

    https://www.site.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-clone/wpclone_backup-2014.zip

    its working

I have tried to copy my MAMP hosted site to a bluehost hosted fresh WP install. When I copy the backup created on my MAMP site using WP Clone and then paste the URL into the new site I get ERROR MESSAGE: A valid URL was not provided. Temporary files created in …. will be deleted. Help!
