    Hello.

I need to restore my site to a previous backup using Updraft Plus (free version). I have done this in the past with no problem, but last week I had an issue that required me going back a few days. When I tried to do so, the restore got stuck on the Uploads, and reported that there was a critical website error, and everything else after (Others, etc.) failed. My WordPress site also kept logging out in the middle of the restore, causing me to have to resume the restore. I tried multiple restore days, all failing at that point. I then tried skipping Uploads, and that seemed to work, but then some of my Media files disappeared completely, which broke my site. I also had one point where the plugins disappeared totally. My last restoration got back the plugins, but now I have multiple issues with my site, mostly from missing and messed up images.

Please help. I need to get my site back to some semblance of where it was.

One note: The reason why I even wanted to do a restore was because I used Imagify to optimize images, and I believe it messed up my images due to smaller sizes. I thought restoring to before that would resolve this, but I think the Uploads not working made everything worse.

    Please help.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

To fix the media files you can manually restore the uploads.zip. To do this, extract the uploads.zip > upload all the content to the “wp-content” folder so it becomes “wp-content/uploads”.

Please try this and let me know if it works.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bryle.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. So I can do that, but (in addition to being concerned this might mess more things up), it doesn’t solve the issue with using Updraft restore to fix everything automatically. I am getting that critical website error on all restores at the Uploads part, and I am concerned that I can no longer restore the site properly.

Can you please assure me that current replacing the “wp-content/uploads” folder won’t break other parts of the site? And also, how can I fix the Restore process so this doesn’t happen again?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the delay.

Yes, it will not affect the other parts of the website as that part only contains media files.

Also, I suggest checking with your host/server admin. If they look at their PHP error log, they should be able to tell the exact cause of the issue. Restoration or migration gettings stuck at the uploads is a common issue. This happens because uploads compose 80% to 90% of the entire website and this requires lots of server resouces to process and some servers cannot handle long processes.

    Thanks,
    Bryle

    Thank you for your response.

Can you please tell me exactly what I should ask the hosting company? What exactly could they do to resolve this issue if they find something in the error logs?

I simply want to ask them the correct question so I don’t go in circles or refer me back to the plugin developer, something I have experienced in the past.

    Thank you.

I am also wondering if I restore all parts EXCEPT Uploads with Updraft, and then place the uploads folder in manually, will this work? Any chance this can create a corruption? Or should I manually update the uploads and then do Updraft restore skipping Uploads?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Yes, that will work. I suggest uploading the uploads first then restore the rest of the components using UpdraftPlus.

    Thanks,
    Bryle
