Unable to Edit theme/plugin through Dashboard

  • I’m trying to edit Themes, Plugins, and Upload media through the dashboard but I’m not able to when files are CHMOD to 755. I have to set file/folder permissions to 777 in order to edit them or upload any media. Why is this? How can I fix it?

    I’m running wordpress 2.8.6
    w/ Cpanel & WHM access (no root access to server)
