Unable to edit pages or posts after 5.1 Upgrade

  • Upgraded to 5.1 and now cannot edit or create posts or pages. Have tried everything I can find suggested and nothing works. When I go to preview, the post is there but editing is not possible. I have the classic editor installed already from the last update so that is not the issue. Any suggestions? The webpage works fine just no updating possible. I have manually deleted and copied 5.1 up to my server, I have tried using Edge instead of Chrome to no avail, I have removed all my extensions in Chrome, I have cleared my cache and browsing history. I went into troubleshooting mode and changed themes and disabled all plugins, still no luck. I got it working for a few hours, 2 days ago but now it is broken again. Any other suggestions?

    What version did you upgrade from? Do you see any type of error or message when going to modify the page?

    If not, what exact issue are you having when trying to edit? The text cannot be updated or you just can’t save the changes that you make?

    Hi,
    I upgraded from 5.0 to 5.1
    There is no error message, the post or page I try to open just does not show any of the text in the editing box so I cannot see anything to make changes. When I drag the cursor over the box, like I want to copy and paste, the text shows up but I cannot make any changes as it vanishes when I click anywhere inside the box.

    Please again attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

    Also, check in your browser console panel if it shows any error there.

    I went into troubleshooting mode, all plugins disabled, twenty nineteen theme enabled and still cannot edit a post I am in the middle of working on.
    Not sure where to look in my browser console panel, I don’t see any errors anywhere.

    I am experiencing the same issue and as advised did all possible steps from changing the theme to switching off all plugins… still I have no success ?? Any thoughts?

    @shotod I tried everything that anyone on WP suggested, all to no avail. I worked with my hosting provider, nothing on their end. Utterly frustrated I went back to WP 4.9 version and all has been good since then. I will not be upgrading anytime soon give the lack of support getting problems fixed ?? My suggestion to you is to revert back to an earlier version of WP, it is the only thing that worked for me. Good luck!

    It is all about the Gutenberg editor that comes with WP 5.0 … Try to install the Classic Editor plugin and everything will be OK. That was at least what solved my issue plus I erased the theme and uploaded a fresh copy of its latest version. Crossing fingers you will have luck with this!!

    P.s. Not updating WP is not such a good idea but I think you know that already.

    Nope, not for me. I have had the Classic Editor plug in for quite a while now and it does not work in the latest upgrade. If you go to the forum on the Classic Editor, a lot of people are having the same problem. They are referring to it as white text coming up so you cannot see it, but nobody has got a fix yet. Not updating WP may not be a good idea but updating it makes my website useless so have no choice but to stay on an old version. Thanks for your input.
