Unable to edit pages

Okay. I’ve had problems using the editor to update pages, including my homepage. I can make the change but it refuses to publish.
First of all, my site told me “an automatic update failed to complete”. So I reinstalled 5.1.1. So far, so good.
I deactivated all of my plugins, as has been suggested elsewhere. I also changed my theme to twentynineteen.
All this and I still can’t edit the homepage, or any other, for that matter.
This seems to be a recurring problem in 5.1.1. How can we site owners fix it or is this something WordPress needs to do?

I was using the Classic Editor afaik. I definitely downloaded it. I’ll try the Health Check plugin and see what comes up.
ETA: the REST API gives a 500 error. What is that API and what do I need to do with it?
