    I am unable to delete or uncheck categories in our blog.

    The person doing maintenance on the WP blog prior to turning it over to me changed permissions to harden it for security purposes. I do not have a record of what permissions were changed to what.

    Also, there was a categories plugin that was installed and was removed. I don’t have details on it but not sure if this could be the root of the issue. I made sure there were no old plugin tables, have repaired the database tables and optimized, and checked the taxonomy tables to be sure there was nothing added to their structure.

    Really do need some assistance with this, have been searching everywhere.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    – increasing the memory available to PHP?

    Generally speaking, folder permissions should be 755 and files should be 644.

    Thanks esmi.

    I can add a category but can never change assigned categories or delete categories.

    – deactivated all plugins – didn’t solve it
    – switched to Twenty-Ten – didn’t solve it
    – reset the plugins folder – didn’t solve it
    – re-uploaded wp-admin and wp-includes from fresh download
    – increased memory
    – changed permissions on wp-content recursively to 777 to test (then back)

    Still unable to delete a category except in the database directly. Unable to uncheck a category once it’s been checked and saved as draft or published.

    Tried repairing your database?

    Yes, database has been checked, repaired, optimized.

    What happens if you create a new category, assign it to a new post and then try to remove the category from that post?

    (Trying to work out whether the issue is limited to existing posts/cats or extends to all)

    I can create a new category, assign it to a new post but then cannot remove the category from the post. Also cannot remove the category. Ever. No matter what theme I’m using or what plugins are activated or deactivated.

    Can you delete posts – right through to emptying the trash?

    Aha! Database user permissions! I bet the db user for WordPress doesn’t have full permissions. Should be easy enough to check and adjust.

    YES! Thank you so much. WOW. Can’t believe that’s all it was. I really appreciate it!

    No problem. I have to admit that I had a chat with another of the forum regulars and he suggested checking db user permissions. It’s not exactly the first thing you would think of – even if the install had been hardened for security.

    I was told another db user had been created when hardening the install. I didn’t realize proper permissions had not been granted. I have searched everywhere for this info but … I was on the wrong trail. I’m so relieved this is fixed.
