unable to create news widget

I just downloaded the free version of WP Frontpage news plugin and it will not let me create a news widget. I go ‘Add New’ under Frontpage in my sidebar, then it quickly flashes all the options before they disappear and I’m left with a grey bar across the top of my screen with the tabs: Content source, display and theme, image source, and advanced. I can make changes to settings in these areas and save changes but I cannot access anything else. I can’t upload news items.
When I try and add frontpage news to my blank page I get and error popup that says “No Frontpage News Widget has been created”
Please help me.
