I have changed the static IP address of my WordPress site, and now Jetpack tells me that “Outbound HTTPS not working” when I try to Set up Jetpack. Site runs on a Bitnami stack on an Ubuntu 20.04 server.

    Hi there, @hollandnumerics,

We’ve been trying to check your Jetpack connection, but we’re also having trouble landing on your homepage – it keeps loading and never displays.

We suspect tha this slow time might be affecting the way Jetpack attempts to connect to your site. Could you please reach out to your hosting provider and check on your site’s speed? There might be something that is dramatically slowing it down that your host might be able to fix – a memory increase might help, for instance.

We’d also need you to ensure that our IPs range is in the allow list for your servers – your host can help you with that too: https://jetpack.com/support/how-to-add-jetpack-ips-allowlist/

Lastly, check for any security/caching plugins you may have enabled and try temporarily disabling them to see if it fixes the problem. You may also want to search for any firewall on your server-side that might be blocking communication with Jetpack—your host should again be able to help you with that.

Let me know how you get on, and we’ll take it from there if necessary. Thanks!

    Hi @erania-pinnera ,

    Thanks for your suggestions:

    • Firstly, the blog site is hosted on my own server that sits in my home office, so I am the host!
    • I use WordFence and have now added the Jetpack IP addresses to the Whitelist, but no change in performance has been observed.
    • I use the server for my company’s cloud server, which has very light use, and have webmin installed to check the performance, and only WordPress is showing slow responses.
    • The problems only surfaced when I changed from a copper wire broadband to full fibre, which gave me a new static IP address. No new plugins have been installed since then, and some rarely used plugins have been removed, like Akismet. Could I have the old IP address hiding in one of my configuration files?

As WordPress appears to be the only application affected, and it runs in a Bitnami stack, I suspect that there may be something in the stack that is causing issues. I have now renamed cURL and openSSL in the stack, so WordPress is using the same version (7.68.0) as the rest of the server, but, even though curl opens HTTPS web pages in a terminal window, the Jetpack connection checker still says that outbound HTTPS is not working. The stack also includes PHP, mySQL and Apache2, but LetsEncrypt is outside of the stack.

Do you have any other suggestions you would like me to try?

    ………..Phil

    Hello there,
Sebastian from Jetpack here. I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for following up on this issue.

<span style=”box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;”>I tried to access your site,?https://hollandnumerics.org.uk/wordpress/, but as Stef mentioned before, it is not loading, and when it does, it takes a lot of time. This issue causes the Jetpack connection to fail.</span>

I confirmed this by checking our logs, as they are showing a timeout error:

ixr_-10520: Jetpack: [http_request_failed] cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 30002 milliseconds with 0 bytes received

We recommend resolving this issue as the first step to fixing the Jetpack connection. Once your site is loading correctly, please let us know, and we’ll take another look at the connection.

    Cheers,

    Hi @chatoxz ,

I host the blog site on my server, but I am no expert on web server configuration, and it looks like I have been lucky from 2015 (when I setup the server) until now.

    • Where should I look to fix this timeout error?
    • Would it be better to re-install WordPress outside of my old Bitnami stack and just port the current WordPress data into the new installation?

All contributions are very welcome, as I am always open to new ideas……………Phil

    Hi there,

I checked your home page again and it took long time to load then showed the database connection error Error Establishing a Database Connection. Upon reloading, and again a few seconds your blog did load.

I believe that your WordPress installation does not work in a stable way which impacts the communication with Jetpack. Please check what’s causing the database issues.

One more thing regarding the Jetpack connection:

Let us know how it goes or if you need any further assistance!

    Hello @hollandnumerics!

Do you have updates about that, do you still need help? We usually close inactive threads after one week of no movement, but we want to make sure we’re all set before marking it as solved. Thanks!

    Hi @erania-pinnera ,

Unfortunately I am still trying to resolve the Outbound HTTPS problem.

    Actions completed:

    • Copied WordPress installation into docker container, so that I am using a more controlled Apache environment. Using wordpress:6.7.2-php8.1-apache and mysql:8.0 services.
    • I have added SSL to this container, and can open my WordPress pages using port 443. URL is now https://hollandnumerics.org.uk.
    • Have added define( ‘FORCE_SSL_ADMIN’, true ); to wp-config.php.
    • Have added statements to /etc/ufw/after.rules to avoid known conflicts with docker:
    # BEGIN UFW AND DOCKER
    *filter
    :ufw-user-forward - [0:0]
    :ufw-docker-logging-deny - [0:0]
    :DOCKER-USER - [0:0]
    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-user-forward

    -A DOCKER-USER -j RETURN -s 10.0.0.0/8
    -A DOCKER-USER -j RETURN -s 172.16.0.0/12
    -A DOCKER-USER -j RETURN -s 192.168.0.0/16

    -A DOCKER-USER -p udp -m udp --sport 53 --dport 1024:65535 -j RETURN

    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-docker-logging-deny -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,ACK SYN -d 192.168.0.0/16
    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-docker-logging-deny -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,ACK SYN -d 10.0.0.0/8
    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-docker-logging-deny -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,ACK SYN -d 172.16.0.0/12

    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-docker-logging-deny -p udp -m udp --dport 0:32767 -d 10.0.0.0/8
    -A DOCKER-USER -j ufw-docker-logging-deny -p udp -m udp --dport 0:32767 -d 172.16.0.0/12

    -A DOCKER-USER -j RETURN

    -A ufw-docker-logging-deny -m limit --limit 3/min --limit-burst 10 -j LOG --log-prefix "[UFW DOCKER BLOCK] "
    -A ufw-docker-logging-deny -j DROP

    COMMIT
    # END UFW AND DOCKER

Attempts to connect site to Jetpack still flag Outbound HTTPS not working. It appears that, while port 443 is open for incoming traffic, port 443 is still not allowing outbound traffic, even though I have set the firewalls in ufw and my router to accept 443 traffic.

Hey Phil – I was thinking to have Jetpack try connecting with your site on HTTP version of the URL instead of HTTPS, but your site is currently not working – I can’t open it on my side in the browser.

Could you please check why it is not working right now?

Also in one of the previous reply your mentioned that you hosted the site on your server so could you please let us know on which server it is, is it AWS or something else?

The site is up and accessible using HTTPS, but very slow. Changing it to HTTP will require major adjustments to the docker and WordPress settings, as docker filters the incoming traffic to just from port 443. That slowness is probably the root cause of the issues connecting to Jetpack.

ufw status before and after adding OUTBOUND 443 and 25:

    Status: active

    To Action From

    Hi @hollandnumerics,

I can tell you’ve been putting a lot of effort into getting Jetpack connected, and I really appreciate the detailed updates. We also explored different possibilities with you but since your site is still not loading for us, though, we’re unable to dig any deeper on our end.

At this point, the issue seems to be related to outbound HTTPS requests and your server’s configuration, which falls outside what we’re able to assist with. I know these kinds of issues can be tricky, so I’d recommend reaching out to a community familiar with Ubuntu and Docker, as they might be able to help pinpoint the exact cause.

Once your site is fully accessible and Jetpack can attempt a connection, feel free to reach out again—I’d be happy to take another look!

    Best regards,
    Alin

    Hi @alinclamba ,

Just to let you know that I have resolved the problem connecting to Jetpack:

    • Outbound HTTPS not working was not caused by any firewall-related issue.
    • Instead /etc/network/interfaces contained the wrong DNS server addresses (a hangover from my previous static IP address), so updating that file with the correct addresses allowed me to successfully connect to Jetpack from my WordPress installation.

While your assistance was very welcome, the problem was caused by an omitted update after my static IP address was changed.

Thanks again anyway for trying, but I need to make a note of all my user updates in future…………Phil

    Hi @hollandnumerics,

Thanks for the update! I’m glad to hear you got it sorted out. Keeping track of those configuration changes can definitely save some headaches in the future. If you ever need help with anything Jetpack-related, feel free to reach out.

    All the best,
    Alin
