Can anyone shed any light on this problem…

I have a website which has been working fine, but now when I try to view it I get the following message…

    “Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at sitename.com:8888.”
And the address bar changes to https://sitename.com:8888/

If I then try to access the Dashboard via sitename.com/wp-login.php whilst I am now prompted to enter my Username and Password, I still get the same error, with the address bar this time changing to https://sitename.com:8888/wp-login.php

My hosting company advised that this is likely to be caused by wordpress script running, which is using port 8888 and preventing the site from running.

I was advised on a support forum that it is a problem with plugins, and was advised to go into File Manager and rename my Plugins folder to plugins.hold, which should then allow me to login successfully to my dashboard.

I did this but it didn’t work, and I still have the same problem.

For info, maybe a red herring but I can see a folder called Updates on File Manager which contains no files. I thought that this may be causing the problem so I renamed the folder to Updates2, but still no joy – I still have the same problem.

Please note to my knowledge this site has never been on a local host (I’ve taken over support)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The site had to be restored to an earlier version from within the hosting account.
Once this was done I had access to login to WordPress and resolve my problems
