Unable to add slider to homepage

I just got the slick slider and image carousel pro plugin, but am having difficulty getting the slider to appear on my homepage. I have the Epik child theme (Genesis Framework), and it has “slider” and “slider wide” widgets in the widget area. When I create a slick slider and paste the shortcode into a text widget and then put it into the slider widget area (the procedure you would use when installing a Gensis slider), it just displays the shortcode in the widget area rather than the actual slider.
