I recently created a new custom menu, under appearance–menu. I read all the instructions about adding pages to the menu, but on the menu page under the “pages” heading it says “no items”. There aren’t even the usual tabs: Most Used, View All, Search.

When I first created the custom menu I already had 2 pages created, titled “about” and “books & selections”. Neither were shown under the pages heading. I also tried deleting both the newly created custom menu and the 2 pages, and then re-created the menu first, selecting “Automatically add new top-level pages”, and then re-created the 2 pages. This yielded the same results.

I am using a custom theme that supports 1 menu.

How can I get the pages to show up on the menu edit page? Is there a setting under Pages that needs to be changed to make them available to be moved into the menu (ie. does the page need to be published publicly, etc)? On my first attempt the pages were published privately, and on my second they were saved as drafts.
Could it be something within my theme that is blocking me from adding these pages to the menu?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Tried all three of those options, but none of them changed anything…

    Any other ideas?

    – Are you sure the pages you made are actual pages, and not posts?
    – Are the pages published (rather than draft) and public (rather than private)?

I can’t think of any other reason they wouldn’t show up in the menu. Could you give us a screenshot of your Pages screen and your Appearances > Menus screen?

aha! Making the pages public (not private) makes them visible to add to the menu.

    Thanks!
