The WordPress installation I am involved with uses WordPress Popular Posts and some custom database calls to get trending posts info and display it on our home page. It has worked up until 4.0.3, but attempts to upgrade past that have failed. For a time after failing to install 4.0.13 and reverting back to 4.0.3, our code was working but returning seemingly random results. In trying to get the system working, I uninstalled/reinstalled both 4.0.3 and 4.0.13, and now neither one will activate, although WordPress goes through the activation procedure.

I have looked in the database, and both popularpostsdata and popularpostssummary are present, with both being empty.

Not sure what to do next. Should I delete the tables from the database and try again?

    Hi @kip-kniskern!

    Let’s start from the top:

    1. Is your site available somewhere? If so, please share the URL so I can take a look.
    2. You mention that the plugin “fails” to install / upgrade. How exactly is it failing? Are you seeing some PHP warning / error messages? If so, what are they telling you?
    3. Go to Settings > WordPress Popular Posts and append &tab=debug to the URL in the address bar of your browser, then share the info here.

It’s been over a week since OP’s one and only comment so I’m assuming he’s managed to solve the issue and in consequence I’m marking this topic as resolved.

Hey there. I have a similar problem. I couldn’t activate the plugin after installed it. My blogs current version is 4.9.1 but it says “Your WordPress version is too old. WordPress Popular Posts requires at least WordPress version 4.1 to function correctly. Please update your blog via Dashboard > Update.
WordPress Popular Posts has been deactivated.”.

Any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks

    Hey @sevilyilmaz,

That’s odd. WPP is detecting your WordPress site as version 4.1 instead of 4.9.1. I’ll correct myself: WPP for some reason thinks your site is running a very old WordPress version and so it’s telling you that you need to upgrade (it’s not that it thinks you’re running WP 4.1, that was me being distracted so please disregard that). Could you please share your site’s URL so I can go take a look?

I’m running WPP on 4.9.1 as well without any issues so there might be a problem with your site.

A couple of things I would try:

    • Disable all of your plugins, then try to enable WPP. If it gets activated successfully, then it’s one of your plugins what’s causing the issue.
    • Install a fresh version of WordPress 4.9.1 somewhere (like a subdomain or on a local server), reinstall your plugins and theme over there and enable WPP to see if it works. If it does, then your current WordPress setup might be corrupted and you’ll have to reinstall it.

Let me know how it goes, alright?

Here is the link of my website: https://www.kurgu-bilim.com/

Disabling the plugings would be tricky because there are some security plugins that I want to keep them active. But this problem could be because of this security plugin. I’ll try to do it when we have low traffic.

    Thank you for suggestions.
