Hi how’s it going, been a wordfence user for many years and for the last few months been experiencing issues with one of my websites. Everything I go to run a scan I get the error “Unable to accurately detect IP’s type detection”.

When I expand out the log it seems to get stuck at 19236 files indexed everytime. I use a WAF firewall and previously had this issue and recieved a block of IP’s from wordfence support which have been added to my firewall whitelist but still experiencing this issue and wondering what else I can do.

    Thank you

Hi @agrtechnology, thanks for getting in touch.

It is possible, despite using Wordfence for some time, that your IP detection method has genuinely changed. How the visitor IP is sent to the site for Wordfence to detect can be affected by proxy servers, load balancers or a change of setup on your hosting platform.

Take note of your own IP – (note that this detection can sometimes not be 100% accurate on cellular phone network connections): https://www.whatsmyip.org

Then head over to Wordfence > All Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs and reference the area under that section that says Detected IPs and Your IP with this setting. See if any of the options there when picked accurately reflect your IP. If one does, don’t forget to hit the SAVE CHANGES button in the top-right after you’re done.

Failing this, take a look at the following documentation that goes through a range of potential scan issues: https://www.wordfence.com/help/scan/troubleshooting

If none of those seem to work or apply for you, can you please try the following?:

    • Stop the existing scan if it is still running (The “Start New Scan” button turns into a “Stop” button while the scan is running).
    • Go to the Tools > Diagnostics page.
    • In the “Debugging Options” section, if “Start scan remotely” is checked, uncheck this option.
    • Click to “Save Changes”.
    • Start a new scan on the Scan page.
    • If the scan fails again, copy the last 20 lines or so from the Log (click the “Show Log” link) once the scan finishes and paste them in your next reply.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

Thanks Peter tried this with no success, the IP’s shown when I go to the settings and IP detection isn’t accurate at all so I added the IP address of the external WAF and tried the diagnostics settings you suggested and unfortunately have the same issue. Attaching some of the log here in case it helps:

Hi Peter did you need anymore information on my end or is that what you needed?

Hi @agrtechnology, thanks for providing the detailed log information.

I am concerned that your host may no longer be passing the visitor IP to your site correctly using any of the methods we can check for. That could certainly be an option if you can check in with their support.

If you’d like us to double-check which IPs are coming through to the site, it’s worth sending us a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com. You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks again,
    Peter.
