    Hi,
I am having a problem with Wordfence plugin which somehow doesn’t seem to identify the correct IP. Sometimes I can’t even access my wordpress dashboard.

On your forum I found that it has something to do with the host company, so I contacted Siteground.

They responded by saying that I am using an external DNS zone (I have ads on my site)
and that the A records of my domain are pointed to some kind of proxy/firewall.

They think WordFence plugin is not properly configured to work with the amazonaws proxy/firewall, thus it’s not detecting the source IP address.

They also suggested to see how the plugin can be configured to work with the amazon proxy/firewall.

Can you help me on this? I mean your plugin says I am in Frankfurt (Germany) which is far from thruth!

    Thanks

Hi @happyfrogtravels, thanks for getting in touch over this.

It sounds like the site is detecting visitor IPs incorrectly, but in a way you can most likely fix yourself. Look at Wordfence > Dashboard > Global Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs and cycle through the options there until it displays your current IP address as seen on https://whatsmyip.com/. That will be the setting you need to use going forward, so click the SAVE button once you’re done.

There are some further explanations of IP detection and which option to select if your site is using Cloudflare here: https://www.wordfence.com/help/dashboard/options/

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hi,
So, I’ve tried to do that and none of the 5 options displays my IP (the one shown in whatsmyip site). Even worse, today it took me 10 minutes to access my wordpress. 10 full minutes. Your plugin was blocking me. The error was too many failed attempts etc. The error was even shown after the first attempt!!!

Anyhow, the support team from Ezoic, my ad company, sente me a message.
According to them it is being caused by Wordfence. It’s likely wordfence is misinterpreting requests going via the Ezoic proxy and blocking them.
They told me I should try whitelisting Ezoic’s Ips with wordfence first and clearing the cache (they’ve attached the list).

Can you help me on that?

Hi @happyfrogtravels, thanks for the extra detail. I can share with you what I know about your setup from previous encounters.

Ezoic seems to work similarly to Cloudflare, meaning you don’t need to whitelist their IPs, but like you’re experiencing here, set things up to see actual visitor IP addresses rather than Ezoic’s.

Ezoic would pass along the correct client IP to the site at your host using X-Forwarded-For so this IP detection method should have worked for you. However, your host are seemingly not then passing the visitor IP along to your site.

Please contact your host to describe this issue as they should be able to remedy this by passing the correct IP in the X-Forwarded-For value.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
