Our website appears to be unstable – it will be fine and accessible for an hour or so, then it’ll be unable to load. Is there an issue with wordpress? I cannot access the dashboard to attempt troubleshooting.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thanks for the quick response t-p!

SFTP doesn’t work – it times out when attempting to connect.
I admittedly don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to the “manually resetting your plugins” link… I am not a website developer and am a volunteer for this nonprofit. I tried my best to install the phpMyAdmin and get it going, but I seem to be hitting a brick wall with that option.

At this point, I’m hoping I can catch when the website comes back online on it’s own, and see if I can quickly disable all the plugins at that point…

Found out how to get to the file manager through my web host.

Renamed all my themes (we have about a dozen and I don’t know which is our active theme) to *-RENAME per the first “manually resetting your plug-ins” link provided. No dice.

Renamed the plugins folder to “plugins.HOLD” per the same link, still no dice.

    Fun times.

Have you discussed this issue with your hosting provider?
If not, try discussing with them.

I’m not sure what happened, but suddenly the website started working again.

I cranked through the WordPress dashboard and removed all unused themes, then ran through the plugins to disable everything. We’re stable now.

I’m planning on touching base with our hosting provider to see what happened, as I’m not entirely sure what the issue was. Disabling plugins and removing old themes did bring us back to a stable state at least.
