Unable to access admin panel – blank page displayed

    I just got a redirect to /wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F and a blank page displayed when I tried to access the admin panel.
    I found that quite a few people had similar issues last year when they updated to 3.1, but I made no updates on any part of the system recently. I tried to remove all the plugins, the theme etc. and it makes no difference. I also tried different browsers.
    I have several instances of WP 3.1.4 and 3.1.3 installed on the same server in other subdomains and they are unaffected, but I did have the same problem for a short time today on the same page only using WP 3.2.1 and hosted on another server. I managed to login from Chrome without having to do anything else. Now this one works fine on all browsers, but 3.1.4 doesn’t.

    After manual update to 3.3.1 I finally got the “database must be updated” message, and everything works fine now.

    I’d still like to know why this happened? There were no updates applied to any of the sites, and this seems to be a common problem. I’ve just seen another post few minutes after mine with similar self resolution.
