Ubuntu install and database migration

  • Hi there everyone maybe you can help me.

    I want to move my WordPress blog from windows enviroment to Ubuntu (linux) enviroment.

    I have been googling everywhere and I’m really stuck at migrating my database and files.

    I can install a fresh copy of WordPress on Ubuntu and it seems to works as it should, but as soon as I move my database and files I get the error message:

    404 You are no authorised to view this page etc

    Can anyone help?

  • sounds like a permalinks problem – are you using the default to start with?
    what was your windows server structure?

    Can I tweak this in the sql database? Sorry random question I know.

    I’m running it on a very old bit of kit with XP OS and WAMP server. Was very simple to set up and I have not had any problems with it. I decided to set my self a goal and run it on linux plus a hardware upgrade at the same time. I have been speaking to few it gurus out there and this would seem like a good idea to run it on Ubuntu due to the low load it would have on the my machine. My current XP box dies when more people come to read it.

    The deafult install works fine no problemes there what so ever I can post add comments etc.

    Now I’m not a Linux gugru so go easy on me please.

    Maybe do a default, clean install on your Ubuntu box. Then, using phpMyAdmin, drop the tables on that clean install…export the db from your windows install, open the sql file in a text editor, do a search/replace on the url to change all instances of the old to the new, and import that sql file into your new (now empty) db. Then move over your custom themes and uploads directory. Make sure you are using default permalinks on both until you get everything working.

    This is the error I’m getting now:

    Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0

    Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required ‘/var/www/wordpress/index.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear’) in Unknown on line 0

    This must be something to do with file permissions?
