I’ve activated the plugin and had both Universal Analytics status turned on and custom tracker turned on. If both are enabled, does this put the tracking code on my site twice?

After upgrading last night and implementing the plugin, My bounce rate dropped from 80ish% to 1.2%. I googled it and some say it’s because the tracking code was implemented twice, so I turned off the custom tracker for the time being.

I just need some confirmation on this. The entire upgrade from GA to UA has been one big confusing mess. Help!

    Hello,

What code did you add to ‘Custom Tracker’ section?

    Hi,

I added the tracking code UA supplies in the admin property section plus the one line for demographics:

    ga(‘require’, ‘displayfeatures’);

I had both the UA and custom tracker turned on in the widget because I had problems validating it. Skipped validating and things worked fine but my bounce rate dropped.

After I unchecked the custom tracker in the plugin to off, my bounce rate seems to be back to normal.

Yes, that was the right thing to do. It is not recommended to use the same tracking code in both – Universal and Custom trackers. In Universal Analytics settings there is an option – ‘Enable Display Advertising’. It turns on ‘demographics’ report as well.

I should probably add more information how these trackers differ and what each feature stand for.

Well I’m glad my fumbling about served a good purpose! Maybe adding more info would cause less confusion. I did not know ‘enable display advertising’ meant it would handle the demographics code UA wanted me to add!

I will add more information and instructions in the next release ?? Thanks for pointing that out!

    Glad to help! ??

Sorry to jump in here, but I see this thread is still open: I’m having the same issue that my bounce rate dropped significantly ever since I started using this plugin.
    My settings:
    For Universal Analytics:
    Status: on
    Track events: checked
    Enable Display Advertising: checked

    Nothing else checked

    For Classic Analytics:
    Status: on
    Nothing checked

    For Custom Tracker:
    Status: off

    Thanks!

    No need to apologize! ??

I just checked your website and it seems to be configured correctly. There are no double trackers there. How big the change in bounce rate was?

It went from about 79% to little over 17%.
    Quite a big change.
My pageviews also went up, logically, but it’s quite the difference and it’s remarkable that it happened right after installing UA.

Correction: those were my average bounce rates I gave.
    They’re actually 0 now:/

That is strange. Do you use event tracking?

Apparently it was because I was running both the classic and the universal code at once. When I disabled the classic code, bounce rate shot up again

    Alright.
