    Hi All

We run wp with wplms theme. We were just doing ‘bulk apply’ deactivate of our plugins to get ready to update to newest wp version, and we get this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_is_blog_page() in /home4/brentonh/public_html/australiaonlinecourses.com/wp-content/themes/wplms/includes/func.php on line 23

Can anyone help? We need to get back up asap!

Yes see we do update all plugins & theme as the new ones become available.

But I was lead to believe that to update WordPress itself to the new version, we must first deactivate all our plugins, then update wp, then activate all the plugins one by one, testing the site at each one, to make sure one of them doesnt bring the site down .. at least we would know which one isnt compat. with the new wp version.

No, that is completely unnecessary, if You update the plugins one by one, You get the same result, if a plugin update brings down the site after an update, You just have to deactivate it manually, through FTP by renaming it’s folder’s name.

    Well..

We get the files sent to Dropbox too in case we need ’em.

the first time ’round I did ‘bulk apply’ deactivate all plugins, but it crashed. I only got it back by uploading func.php file to file mgr.

So..I’m hesitant to do bulk appy again to deactivate, are you saying we dont have to deactivate the plugins before we upgrade to newest wp version?

    What is safest?

Yes. It is safer not to use bulk update.

    My advice is:

    • Make a backup of Your files and database before updating anyting
    • Update the plugins one by one. If You open the update page in the WordPress Dashboard, there is an update link for each plugin, use that instead of the bulk update
    • first update the plugins, then the theme, and lastly WordPress

And what I almost forgot, You don’t need to deactivate a plugin for update, only when You don’t need it. For updating, simply click on update. WordPress will take care of the rest.

    Well here goes

    I’m going to deactivate all

    Update wp

    Activate all

    Wish me luck..

    Okay, Good luck ??

And keep me updated how it goes

    Thread Starter Brent Havill

    (@brent-havill)

    Nope

It wont deactivate buddypress plugin, just says:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_core_get_user_displayname() in /home4/brentonh/public_html/australiaonlinecourses.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php on line 865

So I cant go ahead until i deactivate it I assume?

I found out which plugins wont ‘de-activate’:

    Buddypress
    vibe course module
    vibe custom types
    wplms customizer plugin
    wplms front end

So if we have to deactivate all plugins prior to wp update, we’re in trouble at this part..

    Balint Toth

    (@tothbalint)

Those plugins are most likely required by the theme.

Again, You DO NOT NEED to deactivate a plugin to do an update ??

Okay, well I just updated wp for the first time ever without deactivating plugins.

It worked, just as you said BT

But God…so scary. Losing your whole site is like losing your tongue (it changes your whole face) ( I’m told)

Anyway, after a very very stressful Friday (one student bought 3 courses and wanted to cancel once we lost the site, even though we had emailed all the stuff thru) We are finally back, with the new wp

thanks for all your time bro

You are the best! (of the best)..

Have a nice and calm weekend!

    Cheers,

    Ha ha

I’ll try..I’m doing security for a UFC type function Sat night with some other guards, then security for a local Returned Soldiers Club which is almost flooded due to our Queensland cat. 4 cyclone

    A good weekend?

    I wonder..
