In the WordPress sidebar, under the MC4WP menu, there are the following options:

    MC4WP
    Mailchimp
    Forms
    Integrations
    User Sync
    E-Commerce
    User Sync
    Reports
    Other

Why are there two “User Sync” options?

On our site, the first one looks configured, but when select the second one it has “Enable User Sync?” turned on, but the other options are not set.

Somewhat unrelated, but is it non-destructive/safe to use the “Manual Synchronization” “Synchronize All” button?

    Hi,

The old usersync plugin is no longer supported and can be deleted from Plugins > Installed plugins.

The new UserSync is build into the Premium addon.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know!

So it seems the settings weren’t migrated. The new option built into the premium edition does not have settings for the double opt-in, how is that managed? Right now we have it set to no, but it would be undefined if we turn off the separate user sync plugin, how do we set it for the version built into the premium version?

The new ?UserSync will not touch subscription status, it will only sync data for already subscribed users. We made this choice in light of current privacy laws.
    ?
To subscribe a user we recommend using one of our other integrations such as the WordPress Registration Integration you can find under MailChimp for WP > Integrations. That way a subscriber has a clear opt-in moment and users can’t be accidentally/unwillingly subscribed or unsubscribed via usersync like in the old version.

You can keep using the old version of usersync at your own risk if you need that feature.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know!

I don’t understand how GDPR plays into the automation of subscribing, as it seems the privacy of their data, whether it is in our system or MailChimp, is already affected by just putting them on the list. We only do this in conjunction with customers and sales, for which a specific relationship is established and the communications are related to that relationship.

GDPR aside, two particular use cases that affect us, but the most important perhaps is that as part of a purchased subscription users sign up and are/were subscribed to a list in MailChimp that were used to deliver actual items over time directly related to their purchase. Without automatic subscription, this falls apart entirely.

Further, it seems strange that this feature would be restricted on the basis of GDPR, because you are not liable for how a site owner chooses to use the systems, so it would be up to us to handle the data with care, which we do. To take away a rather core and critical piece of how we have used the plugin is a bit frustrating.

Is there any mechanism we could put a filter or hook in to interact with your plugin to restore the previous functionality even if you didn’t make it an easy public option? That way cases like ours where it is rather critical to how the site works could continue on?

    Hi,

You can still use the checkout integration and set that to implicit. That will subscribe them at the moment of checkout and that is a clear opt-in moment, unlike usersync would be. You find this under MailChimp for WP > Integrations > WooCommerce checkout. There is a checkbox to make it Implicit.
Wouldn’t it make much more sense to subscribe someone at the moment of checkout since you mention them buying something as the reason for subscription?

While we are not liable we do want to make our plugin user and privacy friendly. When you start syncing all your wordpress users and subscribe (or sometimes unsubscribe depending on your settings!!) all of them at once this often turned out not to be the desired effect. Subscription should take place outside of usersync and even for your situation that doesn’t seem like a problem to me. But of course you can keep using the old usersync if you wish.

We really removed the subscription part of the code of the rebuild usersync so there is no way to do that even with custom code either.

How does all of this play out when using your premium e-commerce integration, is the syncing of orders and the ability to segment based on purchase history, abandoned carts, etc. now only available for customers who have explicitly subscribed?

    Hey Doug,

There are 2 kinds of MC users. “Subscribers” & “Transactional” users. To send them a newsletter or any marketing emails, they will need to be added as subscribers and for this, you can use our “Checkout” integration.

However, even if the user does not opt-in, our e-commerce sync will add them as a transactional user and you can segment them, send them abandoned cart email or any other transactional emails.

    Thanks. That makes sense.

By the way, I do care about privacy and care for our customers and users, but not all of us are subject to GDPR.
