Two quick questions on SuPHP?

  • I’m having some trouble with being able to have my wp-content/uploads folder as anything other than 777. So, my webhost has recommended I install suPHP and set all folders to 755 and all files to 644.

    1. Is there any problem I should be aware of with SuPHP?
    2. Are there any exceptions to folders at 755 and files at 644 I should know about?

    I assume this will also help me with some automatic upgrade issues I have with plugins.

  • Are you on a dedicated server? Then what’s the problem with 777 permissions for the uploads folder?

    755 & 644 permissions won’t let other users to modify your files. But if you don’t share a server with other users, it’s not an issue.
    On the other hand, with SuPHP, security holea in .php files can provide full access to all your files (not just in the uploads directory)

    Yes, I’m on my own dedicated server. I must not understand then something about the permissions as it relates to shared or dedicated servers. Could you explain a bit for me?

    Guess that means no.

    @useshots – there is no problem doing that, the issue is when a user tries to upload a new media file, where it requires a new directory (new month) – it’s created as ‘apache’ user/author role (as described by hosting provider), which prevents it from uploading content, regardless of whether or not directories are set to 777 permissions.
