• I’m new to WordPress. I am testing this blog for a client and want to be able to seamlessly show it to her without bumbling. It was relatively simple to upload and set up but I’m stumped on Themes and Publishing. Themes. I have downloaded a few themes and uploaded them to wp-content/themes/’themename’ and when I try to access the theme thru presentation under admin rights ALL my themes come up as Broken. All state that the template is missing. This includes the default and the classic themes. Publishing I have attempted to publish an entry and I can create it and view it but if I click Publish nothing happens. They remain in my drafts and I can go back in to them and then click publish and it takes me to a site that shows it but if I go back to the main page it comes up with an error Not Found Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here. I waited thinking maybe there is a delay in posting but I came back 30 mins later and it still is showing as a draft. Is it something that I’m doing wrong? I have uploaded all the files again to my site https://www.advancedrepairtech.com/~melissa

Root – Thank you for the explanation. It is very much appreciated. As I’ve stated before I know next to nothing about programming with PHP & mySQL. I know a bit about HTML but that’s about it. I did not know what significance a tilde had upon the uri and when I asked you, you said nothing. An explanation at that point would have been wonderful. I am a computer tech. I work on hardware and software related problems DUE to hardware and customer abuse. When someone brings a machine to me I can usually fix it in short order. But as far as the languages that make the software work I’m clueless. Thank you again.

Installing WordPress doe not require you to be a *programmer* or a *geek*. It is a user operation. Someone suggested you look at file permissions. That is also a user operation. It does not require your server admin to be back from his vacation. No wonder he needed a break. I would have shot myself by now. ??

Yes I recall that and I did log into the server to look at file permissions…I have absolutely no authorization to do anything but delete or empty tables. And I also recall saying that it was relatively simple to set up and ‘install’
But you dropped a clue that to a person without a programming background meant absolutely NOTHING. This is the last post to you about this. Obviously, your arrogance gets in the way of the explanation. Have a wonderful life Root. ??

Ok. So now my URL is https://blog.advancedrepairtech.com
It is doing almost the same thing as with the tilde, the only thing that is different is the fact that NOW it will let me post a comment but I still can’t publish a post. Themes are still broken. I’m not sure what is wrong but I”m positive that the server is working properly. We use this for another php/mysql data base application that works without any issues. I’ve used Firefox (default browser) and IE with no difference. I created some categories but they do not show up on the main page and as soon as I edited the ‘hello world’ post the main page comes back with an error that what I’m looking for isn’t there.

I created some categories but they do not show up on the main page

I can solve that problem. Empty cats don’t show up. Thats standard.

That makes sense. BUT I can’t post anything so that they aren’t empty.

root is a smartass, i’m kinda fed up with them. And that lame excuse that you “should get them” – they’re the top of the heap and everybody has just to smell their farts.
Anyway, i’ve got problems with my squirly thing too, and I came across this post.

… and I’d like to ask root how come the tilde “issue” is not and issue with other programs (discussion boards and blogs), and has problems only in WordPress.
    Like this one for example:
    https://oregonstate.edu/~dogaruc/vizuinasmf/
It’s in the domain, is it not? What your smart glance tells you? I should fire the geek, ain’t I?
The problem is that WordPress changes the tilde with %7E, which was considered safe some ten years ago, and then a host of (possible) problems. I for example cannot login into my blog (i get some crap that my browser block cookies) unless I manually change %7E back to tilde in the address.

Now, I don’t know all the mystique around “why tilde is not good” (there’s a web saying that “This is a strange Unixism in the World Wide Web, imitating the Unix practice of referring to the home directory of a user by notations like ~ (the user’s own home directory) and ~username (the home directory of user username). More exactly, this is a convention applied in many (but not all) Unix shells, or command interpreters; it does not work universally even in the Unix universe. There is hardly any explainable reason why such a convention was ever adopted. There is definitely nothing intuitive about it. How could you guess that ~ stands for ‘home directory of’? Thus, people with no Unix background most probably have difficulties in realizing what the funny symbol ~ stands for. “), however, it works fine with other programs (phpbb, simple machines, Gallery2, etc) – so it is possible to come around this issue NOT from the user’s side (I can’t do anything about that fucking tilde, that’s how my university’s webmasters decided it should be)
